Introduction

Review the TUFLOW CATCH interventions output summary. Create a TUFLOW CATCH JSON file to review how the treatment devices are removing pollutants.

Refer to TUFLOW CATCH Tutorial 1 for information on timeseries outputs.

TUFLOW CATCH Interventions Output Summary

Review the interventions summary:

  1. In Windows File Explorer, navigate to the TUFLOWCatch\results folder and open TC04_001_catchment_hydraulic_intervention_summary.csv.
  2. This file contains final cumulative flows, masses entering and masses removed for all intervention devices and pollutants. All output masses are in grams.

  3. bufferStrip1 has no paddocks near it, and therefore has no pathogen masses entering or being removed.
  4. If the removed mass is divided by the cumulative mass, the resulting value represents either the removal constant (if a constant removal equation was used), or the average removal performance (if a table removal method was used). For example, in trench1, the removal performance for SED_CLAY is calculated by: rem SED_CLAY [g] / cum SED_CLAY [g] = 0.4. This matches the removal constant defined in the .tcc. In contrast, bufferStrip1 uses a table removal method for SED_CLAY, resulting in: rem SED_CLAY [g] / cum SED_CLAY [g] = 0.999. This shows that bufferStrip1 removed significantly more clay than trench1. The graph below demonstrates this calculation for each pollutant across all the treatment devices:

Create JSON File

Follow the steps outlined in TUFLOW CATCH Tutorial 1 to create the JSON file, TC04_001.tuflow.catch. When selecting the 'Results', ensure that the following files are all selected:

  • TC04_001_catchment_hydraulic.xmdf
  • TC04_001_receiving_HD.nc
  • TC04_001_receiving_WQ.nc

TUFLOW CATCH Map Outputs

Review the TUFLOW CATCH map outputs using the JSON file:

  1. In Windows File Explorer, navigate to the TUFLOWCatch\results folder and drag and drop TC04_001.tuflow.json into QGIS. Hit F7 to open the Layer Styling panel.
  2. In the Layer Styling panel, select 'Conc WQ_PATH_ECOLI_ALICE_100ML' as the result type. Update the symbology as needed.
  3. In the Temporal Controller dock, use the time slider to view the pathogen concentration results. Notice how the ecoli is removed by the treatment devices. In areas where there are no interventions, the pollutant concentrations are much higher (i.e. the eastern waterhole).


Use the TUFLOW Viewer to review the TUFLOW HPC map outputs:

  1. Open TUFLOW Viewer from the TUFLOW Plugin toolbar and open the simulation results. Select File > Load Results - Map Outputs. Navigate to the TUFLOWCatch\results folder and select TC04_001_catchment_hydraulic.xmdf.
  2. In the TUFLOW Viewer panel, select 'Conc SED_CLAY'. For consistency, the same symbology as the JSON has been applied in the video below.
  3. Zoom in to bufferStrip1. Use the Plot Time Series tool (from Map Multi) to place a point on either side of the device to see how bufferStrip1 is removing the sediment.


  4. Using the same process as above, observe the mass removal occurring at the other devices.
