=Introduction=
The native non-Graphical User Interface (GUI) form of TUFLOW uses Geographic Information System (GIS) files for its spatial inputs. TUFLOW requires specific file formats for all of its GIS inputs, corresponding to specific TUFLOW commands or functions. To accommodate for this requirement, the first task in any modelling project requires the writing of template (empty) GIS files. The process how to write the template (empty) GIS files is compatibledemonstrated with:in [[Tutorial_Module01#Project_Initialisation|Tutorial Module 1]].

The Section below provides a summary of the template (empty) GIS files, the associated relevant TUFLOW command and a basic decryption of the file type / command function.
<li> MapInfo mif/mid format
<li> ArcGIS, QGIS and SAGA shapefile format.
<li> Grid raster files in ASCII, FLT and NETCDF format
<li> TIN files in SMS 2dm, 12D 12da or Civil3D xml format.
