Introduction

This page contains a brief introduction to the ArcGIS software. A number of ArcGIS tasks which are repeatedly used in creating a TUFLOW model are described below, each of these has a separate page. If you have any suggestions to be included in these pages, please add them to the discussion page. Please add ArcGIS Suggestions Here!.

Shapefile Naming Conventions

In these ArcGIS shapefiles different object types (points, lines and regions) are stored in separate files. When TUFLOW outputs in shapefile format, each file ends in:

  • _P to indicate a point file;
  • _L to indicate a line file; or
  • _R to indicate a region (polygon) file.

Basics

This section outlines some basic GIS functions that are regularly used in creating TUFLOW models using ArcGIS.

  1. Create a projection file for TUFLOW
  2. Create a grid from points
  3. Convert raster to .asc format for direct read in TUFLOW
  4. Convert raster to .flt format for direct read in TUFLOW
  5. View raster value

Tips and Tricks

  1. Labelling messages file
  2. Convert lines to points
  3. Assign raster value to points (point inspection)
  4. Extract breakline for TUFLOW import
  5. Hotlink to External Files
  6. Extract cross-section from raster data
  7. Feature Editing

arcTUFLOW Toolbox

A toolbox is available for Arc Map 10.1 and newer, this toolbox helps with streamlining the process of creating and editing a TUFLOW model in ArcMap. This utility can be downloaded from the TUFLOW website: http://www.tuflow.com/Tuflow%20Utilities.aspx

  1. Loading the Utility
  2. Configure TUFLOW (Required Initialization Step)
  3. Create TUFLOW Files
  4. Import Empty (template) TUFLOW Files
  5. Run TUFLOW Simulation
  6. Load Simulation Input SHP Files
